Rep. Josh Gottheimer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey's 5th district, has expressed concerns over market control by meat-packing processors and high grocery prices through a series of tweets. His comments come amid ongoing discussions about food costs affecting middle-class families.

On January 27, 2025, Rep. Gottheimer highlighted the issue of market dominance by meat-packing companies: "Right now, the four largest meat-packing processors control 85 percent of the market. We need to stop meat and poultry companies that are colluding to jack up prices and rip off hard-working middle class families here in Jersey."

In another tweet on the same day, he announced plans to reintroduce legislation aimed at addressing grocery price inflation: "Finally, I’ll be reintroducing the Lower Grocery Prices Act to require the federal government to create a comprehensive plan to combat high prices and deliver critical relief to Jersey families struggling with everyday costs."

Later that day, Rep. Gottheimer reiterated his commitment to reducing food costs nationwide: "Yes, they are — which is why I’m introducing the Lower Grocery Prices Act. My bill will help lower food costs for families in Jersey and across the country."
