Traditional Hopi arts and crafts that date back hundreds of years but are still practiced today include pottery, basketry and textile production. They continue to serve important functions in everyday life as well as in ceremonial contexts. Hopi wicker plaques are often given as a gift at ceremonies and used for social purposes. They are also manufactured for sale in the marketplace. These baskets are made by plaiting sumac, natural and dyed, to achieve many designs. The tools used are a knife, an awl, and the hands of the weaver.
