These baskets are part of a larger donation of 22 objects, collected by Joan Cook Luckardt between 1981-1983 while she was doing fieldwork for her doctorate with the Passamaquoddy, a North American Indian tribe who live in eastern Maine. Most of the baskets date to 1981-1983 but few date to the 1940’s. Passamaquoddy men and women made baskets; some of the most famous basket makers were men. The Passamaquoddy started making fancy baskets as a means of economic survival to sell to tourists during the Victorian era. They continued to be made through the 1980s to today, evolving to become a nationally recognized art form which expresses Passamaquoddy traditional art and their living culture.
