National Color with Battle Honors (SHFC40)
7th Infantry Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers
Silk, 1864-65
The Union Army carried national flags that had 33, 34, or 35 stars. This flag has 35 stars, indicating that it was made in the later years of the Civil War after West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state. It belonged to the men of the 7th New Jersey Infantry, a regiment raised at Camp Olden in Trenton. From 1862 until 1864, the 7th Infantry formed a part of the famous Second New Jersey Brigade. Their flag was delivered to the field on March 14, 1865. Since the fighting lasted less than a month after it was received, the flag saw little battle action. But it does bear “battle honors,” the gold-painted names of the 24 bloody battles in which the regiment fought.
