On behalf of Felician University, we wish all of our Jewish brothers and sisters a Happy and Blessed Hanukkah!
Hanukkah in 2022 began on Sunday, Dec. 18, and will end on the evening of Monday, Dec. 26. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival with the first day known as Chanukah, Festival of Lights, and Feast of Dedication. The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication.” It commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the subsequent miracle of rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and restoring its menorah, or lamp. During this Festival of Lights, families light the menorah, recite blessings and enjoy symbolic games like dreidel (a spinning top) and foods like latkes (potato pancakes) or sufganiyah (jelly-filled donuts).
Today Hanukkah is a reminder that it’s up to us to be a light in the darkness, and even a little light can go a long way. Blessings to all for a joyous festival of lights!
