This sports-themed stein (beer mug) was made by the Ceramic Art Company, forerunner of the famed Trenton-based Lenox, Inc. In the company’s first catalog, founder Walter Scott Lenox wrote that he aimed to create ceramics “of high esteem.” Around 1900, the Ceramic Art Company manufactured steins and other utilitarian products celebrating the increasingly-popular sport of golf. Depicting golfing dress, equipment and even early course clubhouses, steins were sometimes awarded as trophies for early golfing competitions. A silver band engraved with the details of the tournament victory was sometimes applied to the lip of the stein, transforming it into a unique trophy. This example from our collection, made in 1902, is believed to have been awarded as a tournament trophy but is not decorated in this manner. It does, however, provide some wonderful depictions of early golf.
