DID YOU KNOW Thomas Edison and his colleague Edward Johnson unveiled the very first outdoor electric Christmas lights display back in 1880. Just ten years after that, the holiday lights were being mass-produced for storefront displays, and shortly after became affordable to the general public

Fast forward to now where Christmas lights are SO popular that they use around 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours of energy in the US

Fortunately, there are ways to stay spreading holiday cheer with your light displays AND be energy conscious. Check out some of our favorite tips below

Switch to LED lights- they use up to 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbsTime is energy! Keep your lights on a timer or use a smart plug so you don’t forget to turn them off late at night or in daylight

Power strips are a great way to make sure your lighted décor won’t take up energy even when they are switched offUse fiber optic décor, which uses only one light source to flow through multiple visible light points
