Residents of Upper Saddle River are being reminded to follow local ordinances and safety guidelines during the current winter storm. Authorities have instructed that all vehicles must be kept off the streets until snow removal is complete. This measure is intended to allow Department of Public Works crews to plow roads effectively from curb to curb.

The borough has emphasized that it is against local regulations for anyone, including property owners, tenants, or their contractors, to deposit snow or ice onto public streets. Violations can result in penalties, as stated in USR Borough Ordinance 122-17.1. Further details on this ordinance can be found at https://ecode360.com/8646513.

Additionally, state law requires drivers to remove all snow and ice from their vehicles—including the roof and hood—before operating them. Residents are also reminded not to clear vehicles while parked on the street.

According to USR Borough Ordinance 122-17.2, property owners or tenants whose land borders public sidewalks must clear snow and ice from those sidewalks within 12 daylight hours after snowfall ends. The full text of this ordinance is available at https://ecode360.com/13939872.

There are also specific requirements for clearing snow around fire hydrants. Owners of properties with fire hydrants must maintain a five-foot radius around each hydrant free of snow within 12 daylight hours after snowfall. This rule also applies to properties adjacent to hydrants located in rights-of-way.

Officials warn that heavy snow drifts may block exterior vents for appliances such as furnaces, boilers, and dryers, which can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside homes. Residents are advised to check these vents regularly during storms. When using generators during power outages, they should only be operated outdoors and away from doors, windows, and vents. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed and checked for proper function. In case an alarm sounds or symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or nausea occur, residents should go outside immediately and call 911.
