Commissioner LaTourette joined Attorney General Platkin to announce a lawsuit against 5 oil

Commissioner LaTourette joined Attorney General Platkin to announce a lawsuit against 5 oil and gas companies and a petroleum trade association for allegedly making false claims about the existence of climate change and the degree to which their fossil fuel products caused it.

"We are bringing this lawsuit because the oil majors knew the climate science. They knew it at a time when we could have acted...instead of sharing that knowledge, these companies undermined the science. They lied to us. It was not some error of omission. It was intentional."

"Because the science was inconvenient. Not for us, not for the people, but for them. It signaled what is now known: the planet is warming at an alarming rate and to a disruptive degree. It’s warming largely because of human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels."

"They knew the dangers of their products for decades but obstructed science in a self-interested attempt to hold on for as long as they could without having to experience disruptive change themselves. Today’s filing seeks to hold these companies accountable for their actions.”
