Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a U.S. Congressman representing New Jersey’s 5th district since 2017, has raised concerns on social media about the loss of SNAP benefits and rising health insurance premiums affecting families in New Jersey.
On November 4, 2025, Gottheimer posted that “Hundreds of thousands of families lost access to their November SNAP benefits. Here in Jersey, I’m working with our tireless advocates like @TracyZur to get SNAP funded again and help ensure families continue to have enough food to eat. To find a local food pantry in North https://t.co/mXBEjVp57t”.
Later the same day, he wrote about additional financial pressures facing residents: “Families in Jersey are seeing an average health insurance premium increase of 175%, and SNAP benefits are being cut off. Millions of people across the country — more than 180,000 in Jersey — will lose their health coverage because they won’t be able to afford it. I announced https://t.co/FcrFo4Wj19”.
In another post that evening, Gottheimer called for legislative action: “We can’t just let families get whacked by thousands of dollars in premium increases. We can’t let families lose access to SNAP. We must reopen the government in a bipartisan way, extend the ACA tax credits, and fund critical programs like SNAP so that people do not go hungry https://t.co/R9kSUZQPuL”.
Gottheimer’s advocacy comes as part of his ongoing work since replacing Scott Garrett in Congress in 2017. Born in Livingston, New Jersey in 1975 and currently residing in Wyckoff, Gottheimer holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (BA) and Harvard University (JD).
