Rep. Josh Gottheimer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress and representing New Jersey’s 5th district, has recently shared several concerns and efforts related to energy costs and utility management via his social media. Gottheimer, who has been in office since 2017 after replacing Scott Garrett, took to Twitter to highlight his legislative and advocacy work on behalf of his constituents.
On April 21, 2025, Gottheimer tweeted about his legislation efforts: “Finally, I’m fighting to pass my legislation, the Energy Costs Relief Act, which provides a refundable tax credit of up to $350 to help offset rising energy costs and put money directly back into families’ pockets.” The Energy Costs Relief Act aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by families due to increasing energy expenses.
On the same day, Gottheimer addressed staffing issues with LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), expressing concern over recent cuts. He stated, “I’m also calling on Health and Human Services @SecKennedy, who oversees LIHEAP, to immediately rehire LIHEAP staff and work with us to strengthen & modernize the program. Gutting LIHEAP staff isn’t about efficiency — it’s more chaos with zero strategy.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a fully staffed program to efficiently assist those in need.
On April 22, 2025, Gottheimer drew attention to the utility companies in New Jersey, which he argues have a significant role in escalating electricity costs. He tweeted, “Jersey utility companies have a monopoly on electricity — and now they’re claiming they don’t have enough supply to meet the demand, so they’re jacking up rates. A 40% rate increase in one year isn’t good price management — it’s flat-out incompetence, and Jersey families are.” Rep. Gottheimer criticized the 40% increase in utility rates over a year, attributing it to incompetence rather than effective management.
Rep. Joshua Gottheimer, 48, hails from Livingston, New Jersey, and currently resides in Wyckoff. He is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University, where he completed his BA and JD, respectively. Gottheimer is focusing on energy legislation and utility management to support families in his district.
