Josh Gottheimer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey’s 5th district since 2017, recently shared his concerns on social media regarding a bill with significant implications for health and nutritional programs in New Jersey. Gottheimer, who has been serving in Congress after replacing Scott Garrett, expressed his views through a series of tweets.
On May 23, 2025, Gottheimer highlighted the potential impact of the bill on Planned Parenthood services in New Jersey. He stated that “This bill defunds Planned Parenthood — essentially shutting down 23 Planned Parenthood health centers in Jersey that more than 120,000 people depend on each year for access to cancer screenings, reproductive care, and more.”
In another tweet posted on the same day, Gottheimer addressed cuts to nutritional assistance programs. He noted that “This bill makes the largest cut to nutritional assistance in our nation’s history. 820,000 people in Jersey count on SNAP for healthy, nutritious meals.” He further criticized these reductions by stating that “By gutting SNAP assistance and school meals, extremists are taking food out of the mouths of hungry children and families and”
In his final tweet from May 23rd, Gottheimer urged Senate members to reconsider their stance on this legislation. He called upon them by saying “As the Senate takes up this bill, I’m calling on them to protect Jersey seniors, children, and families.” Furthermore, he advised his colleagues that “If my colleagues in the Senate are smart, they will reverse these devastating cuts to programs that Jersey families rely on.”
Born in Livingston in 1975 and currently residing in Wyckoff at age 48, Josh Gottheimer is an alumnus of both the University of Pennsylvania (BA) and Harvard University (JD).
