Josh Gottheimer, a U.S. Congressman representing New Jersey’s 5th district since 2017, has expressed his strong opposition to New York’s congestion tax through a series of tweets. Born in Livingston, New Jersey in 1975 and currently residing in Wyckoff, Gottheimer holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.
On March 21, 2025, Gottheimer tweeted his disapproval of the congestion tax implemented by New York City. He stated that he has opposed the tax from its inception, describing it as “nothing more than a giant cash grab by the @MTA on the backs of hardworking Jersey families.” He called for an end to what he referred to as “madness.” “From Day One, I’ve fought against NY’s Congestion Tax because it was nothing more than a giant cash grab by the @MTA on the backs of hardworking Jersey families.”
Later that day, Gottheimer continued his criticism with another tweet regarding charges imposed on commuters traveling south of 60th Street in Manhattan. On March 22, 2025, Gottheimer addressed job cuts at Novartis’ headquarters in New Jersey. He reported that following an earlier announcement of 139 job cuts, an additional wave would see 427 more positions eliminated. Gottheimer expressed concern about the impact these layoffs would have on healthcare innovation and the state’s economy. “On top of 139 job cuts already announced, Novartis’ headquarters in NJ will cut 427 jobs more in yet another wave of layoffs.”
