Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a U.S. Congressman representing New Jersey’s 5th district since 2017, has used his social media platform to comment on recent federal actions affecting students and schools, as well as highlight engagement with the Indian-American community in New Jersey.
On July 27, 2025, Gottheimer criticized federal visa policy changes under President Trump’s administration, stating: “The Trump Administration is making it harder for students to get visas, adding more barriers to an already massive backlog for Indian students. Now these students don’t know if they will start the school year, hurting our top research universities — including those here in https://t.co/S34Im5Hkku”.
The following day, July 28, Gottheimer referenced efforts to restore funding for schools that had been previously frozen by the Trump administration: “Earlier this month, I joined my colleagues in demanding the Trump Administration unfreeze these critical dollars for our schools. I’m glad the funding has been restored, but it never should’ve been frozen to begin with. Just more chaos from President Trump. https://t.co/rhHZT2x4q8”.
Later on July 28, he shared details of a meeting with members of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), focusing on contributions from the Indian-American community and discussing efforts against hate crimes: “It was great to meet with New Jersey members of the @CoHNAOfficial last week in my Washington office! We had a meaningful conversation about the Indian-American community’s vital contributions to New Jersey and my efforts to combat the rise in hate crimes. https://t.co/WXb0ZWLKvz”.
Gottheimer has represented New Jersey’s 5th District since defeating Scott Garrett in 2017 and resides in Wyckoff. He was born in Livingston in 1975 and holds degrees from both the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.
