U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer, who represents New Jersey’s 5th district, posted a series of statements on his official Twitter account between May 19 and May 20, 2026. The tweets addressed antisemitism in Congress, Congressional oversight of military action, and support for the Jewish community in Bergen County.
On May 19, Gottheimer criticized recent developments within Congress by stating: “This is straight out of the Nazi playbook. There’s no place for this kind of antisemitic lunacy in the Democratic Party or in Congress.”
The following day, he commented on Congressional authority over military decisions: “The Constitution is clear: Congress has oversight of all military action. That’s why I pushed for my bipartisan War Powers resolution last week to force the administration to come to Congress with a clear plan. We must stand strong against Iran’s aggression while still following” (May 20).
Later that same day, Gottheimer participated in a local event and highlighted its significance for the Jewish community: “What a special day in Woodcliff Lake — grateful to join Rabbi Dov and Hindy Drizin and the Valley Chabad community for their groundbreaking. Every shovel in the ground is a statement: Bergen County’s Jewish community is here, growing, and building for the generations to come.” (May 20).
Gottheimer has served as U.S. Representative for New Jersey’s 5th District since defeating Scott Garrett in 2017. He was born in Livingston, New Jersey in 1975 and currently resides in Wyckoff. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from Harvard University.
