Josh Gottheimer, a U.S. Congressman representing New Jersey’s 5th district since 2017, has announced several legislative initiatives through his social media platform. Born in Livingston, New Jersey in 1975 and currently residing in Wyckoff, Gottheimer holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Harvard University.
On June 3, 2025, Gottheimer announced new legislation called the Tariff Impact Act. This legislation aims to require the independent Congressional Budget Office to review the economic impact of any future tariffs before they take effect. He emphasized the importance of understanding “the full impact of any new tariffs before hurting” the economy.
In another post on the same day, Gottheimer formally requested that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) conduct a comprehensive review of how tariffs imposed during Trump’s administration have affected everyday household costs. The review is intended to be broken down by zip code to identify which communities are most impacted.
Additionally, Gottheimer introduced the COOL Act, or Congressional Oversight of Low-Value Imports Act. This proposed legislation seeks to prevent changes to the “de minimis exemption” — which applies to imports costing less than $800 — without Congressional approval. The act aims to protect access to low-value imports.
