Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey’s 5th District, has raised concerns via social media about current and proposed trade policies. Gottheimer criticized the justification for certain tariffs, describing the approach as indiscriminate and potentially harmful to the economy. On March 31, 2025, he wrote: “Right now, he’s trying justify these across-the-board tariffs saying they are for emergency, national security reasons. Tariffs must be targeted and explained without putting a bullseye on our economy.”.
In response to these concerns, Gottheimer announced his introduction of the Reclaiming Congressional Trade Authority Act. The act aims to require the President to provide Congress with a clear strategy regarding trade decisions. In his tweet, dated March 31, 2025, he stated: “I’m introducing the Reclaiming Congressional Trade Authority Act, to require the President to submit a clear strategy to Congress.”
Additionally, Gottheimer addressed the domestic impacts of new tariffs initiated by the then-president. He indicated that these tariffs could inflate new car prices by up to $12,000, increase gasoline prices by 20 cents per gallon, and potentially lead to the loss of 600,000 jobs nationally. Gottheimer articulated his position in a tweet on March 31, 2025, by noting: “Trump’s new tariffs will drive up new car prices anywhere up to $12,000, raise gas prices by 20 cents a gallon, and cost our country 600,000 jobs. None of this makes our country stronger — it only raises costs on our families across the board for things they buy every day.”
