Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey’s 5th district, has voiced his concerns over various policies and their impacts on New Jersey families through recent tweets. The congressman has been an advocate for affordability and access to essential services in his state.
On June 8, 2025, Gottheimer criticized former President Trump’s tariffs by stating: “From the beginning, I’ve been laser-focused on making life more affordable for Jersey families. President Trump’s reckless tariffs on do just the opposite — driving up prices on everyday goods. I’m fighting back with legislation to stop Trump’s chaos and protect your”. He highlighted how these tariffs have led to increased costs for daily necessities and emphasized his legislative efforts to counteract these effects.
Later that day, Gottheimer expressed concern over food security in New Jersey, noting: “Thousands of children and families in Jersey rely on school meals and SNAP just to eat every day. By gutting SNAP, extremists are ripping food from hungry children and families — and sticking our state with the bill to clean up the mess.” He underscored the reliance of many families on programs like SNAP for daily sustenance and criticized actions he perceives as undermining these safety nets.
In another tweet from June 8, 2025, he addressed proposed budget cuts affecting transportation infrastructure: “Instead of making commutes & travel easier for our families, the Trump Administration wants to slash 25% of Amtrak funding for the Northeast Corridor — including New Jersey. 20% of the nation’s GDP runs through our region — a key economic artery for our country.” He warned against reducing funding for Amtrak in the Northeast Corridor, which is crucial not only for regional transit but also for its significant contribution to the national economy.
Gottheimer’s commitment to his constituents is reflected in his consistent advocacy since joining Congress in 2017 after defeating Scott Garrett. A native of Livingston, New Jersey born in 1975, Gottheimer now resides in Wyckoff. He holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Harvard University.
