Broadcast legend Don La Greca returned to Ramapo College of New Jersey this week, broadcasting his ESPN Radio Network show from the college radio booth where he began his career. La Greca, a 1992 graduate, shared on March 11 that sitting in the WRPR-FM studio was a “pinch-myself moment,” recalling how he once dreamed of working in radio while a student at Ramapo.

La Greca’s visit matters to the campus community as it highlights the impact of alumni success and offers current students insight into building careers in media and sports. His journey from student broadcaster to co-host of ESPN’s “Michael Kay Show” and television play-by-play voice for the New Jersey Devils demonstrates the opportunities available through dedication and hands-on experience.

During his return, La Greca participated in Ramapo’s Presidential Speaker Series with President Cindy Jebb. In their fireside chat titled “Mic Check: Don LaGreca ’92 Live at Ramapo!,” they discussed topics such as women’s sports, analytics in coaching and broadcasting, team cultures, and La Greca’s experiences as a first-generation college student. “Ramapo offered me the opportunities to do all the things that I wanted to do, and have a chance to be the first college graduate in the La Greca family,” he said.

La Greca reflected on how being part of Ramapo’s community helped him grow personally and professionally. He credited late communications Professor Andre Perry for mentorship during his time at WRPR-FM. “He taught me that hard work is the best way to do it, and I am appreciative of him, and Ramapo,” La Greca said.

Current students expressed appreciation for meeting La Greca. Isaiah Chung said listening to him provided motivation for his own career goals. Eli Gazarkh noted it was inspiring to see an alumnus succeed in professional sports media. Emily Morra described feeling star-struck by meeting someone she admired from her youth.

President Jebb thanked La Greca for returning: “We are just really honored that you are here, and so proud of you carrying the flag forward, and all that you do for Ramapo as you continue to have a stellar career.” More information about past speakers can be found on the Presidential Speaker Series website.
