Bergen New Bridge Medical Center recorded the highest number of residents among Bergen County nursing homes during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The medical center offered 574 beds in total—403 above the county’s average as of Q1 2026. It assisted an average of 357.1 residents throughout the quarter.

The center received a 5-out-of-5 overall CMS rating, outperforming New Jersey’s statewide average of 3.4 for nursing homes.

Within the same period, New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Paramus was the second largest at 336 beds, with Christian Health Care Center ranking third at 304 beds.

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center closed the quarter without any reported fines or penalties.

Bergen County had four nonprofit nursing homes in total.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate continued growth in the older adult population, while the number of younger Americans declines. Between 2020 and 2024, the 65-and-older demographic rose by 13%, and the population under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the number of older adults in the United States grew from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024. This dramatic rise shapes demand for elder care nationwide.

A 2021 research brief estimates that almost half of Americans in this age group—around 28 million—may need long-term services and supports, with more than a third expected to require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
